Wilderness Travel Adds Snowdonia, Northern Spain and Malta–Sicily Walks for 2027

Three new small-group walking trips for 2027, from a level-5 Snowdonia hike to a food-led week on Spain's north coast. Prices, single supplements and every departure.

Wilderness Travel, the Berkeley, California, adventure company that has run small-group trips since 1978, has added three new walking itineraries to its European program for 2027: a hard hiking week in Wales’s Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, a food-led walking trip along Spain’s northern coast, and a combined Malta and southern Sicily trip. All three cap groups at 15 and include almost everything once you arrive, but departures are thin, with one or two dates each next year.

“We want to provide our travelers with European experiences that go beyond the familiar,” Scott Abbott, the company’s managing director, said in the announcement. Prices are in US dollars, per person, based on double occupancy.

Ultimate Snowdonia: Hiking in Wales

  • Length and price: 10 days, from US$8,695. Single supplement US$1,910.
  • Departures: 16–25 May 2027 is the only 2027 date. Two 2028 dates are posted: 14–23 May and 4–13 June.
  • Difficulty: Wilderness Travel rates it level 5. Expect about 14.5 km (9 miles) a day, with more than 900 metres (3,000 feet) of climb and descent on several days, on uneven ground.

The trip has six demanding hiking days in north-west Wales, including a climb of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain in Wales. There’s history too: Edmund Hillary’s 1953 British Everest expedition trained in these mountains. Between hikes, the itinerary takes in castles and the Welsh language, still spoken day to day across the region.

Treasures of Spain’s Northern Coast

  • Length and price: 8 days, from US$8,995. Single supplement US$1,355.
  • Departures: 9–16 June and 15–22 September 2027. No 2028 dates yet.
  • Route: Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela.

This is the easiest of the three, a cultural walking trip rather than a mountain one. It follows the Atlantic coast through Cantabria and Asturias, with stops at the Altamira cave paintings, cider farms, and Oviedo, Asturias’s walkable capital. The food is a big part of it: seafood, fabada (bean and chorizo stew), sidra and cave-aged cheeses. It ends at Santiago’s cathedral, where the Camino de Santiago routes finish.

Note the pricing: it’s the shortest of the three trips and the most expensive.

Exploring Malta and Southern Sicily

  • Length and price: 10 days, from US$8,495. Single supplement US$1,860.
  • Departures: 21–30 October 2027 is the only 2027 date. Two 2028 dates are posted: 27 April to 6 May and 19–28 October.
  • Getting between islands: the Sicily–Malta ferry is included.

The trip starts in Sicily’s Val di Noto, where eight late-Baroque towns, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hikes run through canyons and past natural pools and prehistoric sites, with a stop in hilltop Ragusa Ibla. After the ferry, the Malta half covers Mdina and Rabat, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, and Comino and Gozo, including the Blue Lagoon. The last two nights are in Valletta, the capital.

What’s included

All three trips include a Wilderness Travel trip leader and local guides, all accommodation, all ground transport and luggage handling from meeting to departure, and the activities in the itinerary. Meals are included, with occasional exceptions noted in each detailed itinerary.

Andrew Lovesey is Editor-in-Chief of Not An Atlas, and always on the hunt for the next big thing: where to go, where to stay and what's worth the photo. His first trip was to the family cottage in Prince Edward Island, all rolling hills, red sand cliffs and jellyfish drifting in the North Atlantic. He'll sit anywhere but the middle seat (no armrest wars), never flies without the adapter that lets his AirPods play the in-flight movie, and has eaten at a McDonald's in every country he's visited. Iceland gets a pass because it doesn't have one. He once learned to bead earrings from Aleqa Hammond, Greenland's first female premier, on a ship in the Northwest Passage, and will tell anyone who'll listen that Cincinnati is wildly underrated. Friends say charming, driven and loyal. His mum says persuasive. Next stop: Greece.
