Sydney Airport Screeners Strike Friday

Security screeners at Sydney Airport plan two stoppages on Friday 16 October, 6–10am and 5–9pm. Screening stays open, but expect delays. Virgin Australia is letting Sydney departures move to 17 October.

Some security screeners at Sydney Airport plan to stop work twice on Friday 16 October: from 6:00 to 10:00am and from 5:00 to 9:00pm AEDT. The staff work for Certis, the airport’s screening contractor.

Screening will stay open, but Virgin Australia says it may run at reduced capacity, and it is advising travellers to arrive earlier than usual.

Changing flights

Virgin Australia guests departing Sydney on 16 October can now move to 17 October:

  • Virgin Australia-operated flights, domestic and international: no change fee or fare difference, in the same fare type. Change at least 60 minutes before departure.
  • Partner-operated international flights sold by Virgin Australia: the change fee is waived, but any fare difference applies. Change at least 3 hours before departure.
  • Booked through an agent? The agent makes the change.

Check other airlines’ policies directly. As of early Friday morning in Sydney, Virgin Australia still listed the action as planned. This story will be updated if it changes.
