Where to see the 2027 total eclipse

The Moon's shadow lands in southern Spain, crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and runs the length of North Africa to Luxor and the Red Sea. Near its middle, the Sun goes dark for 6m 23s, one of the longest totalities of the century. Here is the path, what each place gets, and how to plan around it.

Where to watch

Totality, west to east

The closer to the centreline, the longer the darkness. Times are local, for the start of totality. August skies are among the clearest of the year across the Sahara and Upper Egypt; the Atlantic coast of Spain and Morocco has more risk of morning haze and sea fog.

Planning

How to plan the trip

  • Book now. Hotels on the centreline, above all in Luxor and on the Cádiz and Tarifa coast in peak August season, are expected to sell out; refundable rates protect you if plans change.
  • Pick a base with a fallback. Weather is the one thing you can't book. A place with roads along the path lets you drive to clear sky the morning of.
  • Plan for heat in Egypt and the Sahara. August in Luxor is extremely hot by late morning: water, shade and an early start matter.
  • Bring certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) for everyone, and a solar filter for any camera or binoculars. Naked eyes only during totality itself.
  • Check government travel advice before you choose. Parts of the path, including Libya, Yemen and Somalia, are under advisories against all travel.
Questions

Quick answers

When is the 2027 total solar eclipse?

Monday 2 August 2027. The Moon's shadow crosses the Atlantic, southern Spain, Gibraltar, northern Morocco, North Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia during the morning and midday, local time.

Where is totality longest?

Among the places on our map, Luxor has the longest totality at about 6m 20s. The longest anywhere is 6m 23s, close to the point of greatest eclipse.

Can you see the 2027 eclipse from Canada or the US?

Almost nowhere. The eclipse happens before sunrise across Ontario, western Canada and the continental US; only easternmost Atlantic Canada, mainly Newfoundland, sees a small partial eclipse as the Sun comes up. The next total solar eclipse across southern Canada and the US is on 23 August 2044, through Alberta, Montana and North Dakota.

How do you watch a solar eclipse safely?

Use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or a solar filter for every partial phase. Only during totality itself, when the Sun is completely covered, is it safe to look with the naked eye; put the glasses back on as soon as the first bright point of sunlight returns.

When should you book?

Now, for the best-placed hotels. Rooms in towns on the centreline, especially Luxor and the Cádiz and Tarifa coast in August, are expected to sell out well ahead, and tour operators are already selling eclipse departures.
