Four New York State Museums Worth the Drive
Revolutionary New York runs free in Albany until February 2028. Add the Hyde Collection, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Strong for a road trip from Ontario.
New York State’s 250th-anniversary year has produced one big museum show worth crossing the border for, and three long-standing museums that make easy add-ons from Ontario. Here’s how to fit them into a road trip.
Revolutionary New York, Albany
The New York State Museum’s exhibition for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence runs from 1 July 2026 to 26 February 2028. It fills about 7,000 sq ft with more than 200 artifacts and rare documents, according to I LOVE NY, the state’s tourism agency, and follows New York’s part in the Revolution through to later fights for equality: the Battles of Saratoga, the women’s suffrage convention at Seneca Falls, the Underground Railroad and the Stonewall Uprising.
Know before you go: admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30am to 5pm, and closed on Mondays and state holidays. It’s at 222 Madison Avenue, on the Empire State Plaza.
The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls
A house museum at the southern edge of the Adirondacks, with European and American works including Picasso, Botticelli and George Bellows. Pair it with a walk around downtown Glens Falls, which has its own galleries and a self-guided historical walking tour. It’s about an hour north of Albany, so the two make a natural pair.
Corning Museum of Glass, Corning
A collection spanning thousands of years of glassmaking, with live demonstrations. It’s an easy stop on the drive through the Finger Lakes.
The Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester
A museum about the history of play, from toys and games to video games, with hands-on exhibits for all ages. It’s the closest of the four to Toronto and suits families and nostalgic adults alike.
How to do it from Ontario
- Short version: Rochester and Corning over a weekend, crossing at Niagara.
- Longer version: continue east along the Thruway to Albany for Revolutionary New York, then north to Glens Falls, and come home via the Thousand Islands.
- At the border: carry a valid passport or NEXUS card, and check current US entry rules before you go.
