Las Vegas, Seen From the Desert Side
Red sandstone, 2,000-year-old petroglyphs and a dam you can tour from the inside, all a short drive from the Strip. Fall through spring is when to go.
Drive about 40 miles out of Las Vegas and the neon gives way to something much older. Valley of Fire State Park was established in 1935 and covers 40,000 acres of what Nevada State Parks describes as “bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops nestled in gray and tan limestone.” The petroglyphs on its walls date back more than 2,000 years.
Most visitors to Las Vegas never see it. That is the case for going. The city’s desert edge (sandstone, canyon trails, Hoover Dam and a downtown arts district) is the version of Vegas that rewards a car, an early start and the cooler half of the year.
When to go
The desert sets the calendar. At Valley of Fire, Nevada State Parks closes many of its signature trails “annually May 15 – September 30” for safety, including White Domes Loop and the Fire Wave and Seven Wonders loops. At Red Rock Canyon, the Bureau of Land Management requires timed-entry reservations for the scenic drive from October 1 to May 31. Visit Las Vegas points to spring for hiking both, for “the cool weather.”
That makes late fall through spring the right window. One date to note: the park lists an annual maintenance closure from December 1 to 14.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Visit Las Vegas places Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area about 20 minutes from Las Vegas, with more than 25 hikes. It suggests Calico Tank and Ice Box Canyon. The BLM’s one-way scenic drive runs 13 miles (21 km) and takes about 45 minutes without stops.
Entry costs US$20 per private vehicle. From October 1 to May 31, you also need a timed-entry reservation for the scenic drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The visitor centre sits at 3,720 feet, is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and shows a 17-minute film. Visit Las Vegas warns that cell service is limited, so set pickup times in advance if you are using a driver.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is open daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time, according to the Bureau of Reclamation. The visitor centre and tours run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the site is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Reclamation offers three ways in:
- Guided Dam Tour (US$40): includes the historic tunnels and the Powerplant. It is sold in person only, first come, first served, with the whole group present. It often sells out, so arrive early.
- Guided Powerplant Tour (US$25 adults, US$15 ages 4–16): can be booked online.
- Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour (US$15): can be booked online.
Parking in the Nevada-side garage costs US$10. Drones are prohibited, and America the Beautiful passes are not accepted. The LVCVA notes that Boulder City is about 20 miles from Las Vegas and a few miles from the dam, which makes it a natural lunch stop.
The 18b Arts District
Back in town, downtown’s 18b Arts District takes its name from its original 18 blocks. Visit Las Vegas describes galleries in the Arts Factory, murals by Shepard Fairey, D*Face and Faile, and a monthly First Friday street party. Serious buyers come to Preview Thursday the evening before. Most spaces are within a ten-minute walk of each other. In late November, the LVCVA lists the free Neon City Festival downtown from November 20 to 22, 2026.
