Grand Canyon This Fall: What’s Open, What’s Not

In-park South Rim hotels stay closed to overnight guests through 19 November and rim-to-rim is off, so book Grand Canyon fall trips as day visits from Tusayan.

Grand Canyon is open, but for now it works only as a day trip. Grand Canyon National Park has been short of water since a flash flood on 29 August damaged the Transcanyon Waterline. Hotels inside the park on the South Rim stopped taking overnight guests on 31 August. Rim-to-rim hiking is not possible this season.

Here is the position as of Monday 19 October, from the park and its lodging operators.

Lodging

  • Xanterra hotels (El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Kachina, Thunderbird and Maswik): closed to overnight guests through 19 November. Xanterra says bookings arriving on 20 November or later are going ahead for now. Stays that run past 19 November have been moved to start on 20 November.
  • Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village (Delaware North): closed to overnight guests. No reopening date has been given.
  • Phantom Ranch: closed, and Xanterra lists the closure through 19 November. The trails that reach it are shut, so it cannot be reached on foot.
  • Camping: Mather and Desert View campgrounds are dry camping only.
  • Outside the park: the NPS says hotels in Tusayan, just outside the South Rim entrance, are not affected.

Day visitors can still use the rim, the viewpoints and the Rim Trail. Some restaurants are open with reduced hours, including the Arizona Steak House for dinner and the Harvey House Café for breakfast and lunch. El Tovar’s dining room is closed.

Water

Stage 4 restrictions are in force across much of the South Rim. The park asks visitors to bring their own drinking water. On its current projection, the park would start pumping from a new Bright Angel Creek intake by 16 November. Distribution to residents would begin by Thanksgiving (26 November), when concessioners can start bringing overnight guests back in phases. The park says refilling the storage tanks will take about 45 days from the start of pumping, and that every date may change.

Trails

  • Bright Angel Trail: open from the trailhead to Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse. It is closed below that point through Thursday 22 October. There is no water on the trail. The only potable water is at the trailhead tank.
  • South Kaibab Trail: open to Tip-Off. It is closed below that point.
  • North Kaibab Trail: closed in full since the flood, with no reopening estimate. A separate waterline closure between Redwall Bridge and Cottonwood, announced in April, was already set to run from 15 October to about February 2027.

North Rim

Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads are closed from sunset 15 October to sunrise 3 November for road repairs. There is no fuel in the park, and the North Rim campground closed on 16 October. The NPS says the State Route 67 entrance closes for winter at sunset on 30 November or after the first major snowstorm, whichever comes first.
