Forget the Alps: Europe’s Best-Value Slopes
A new index of 144 European resorts finds the cheapest skiing in the Balkans and the best family value in Sweden. Here is where the money goes furthest.
Ski holidays in the big Alpine names keep getting dearer. A new Ski Resort Index from The Snow Centre, a UK indoor skiing venue, scores 144 European resorts on lift capacity, slope variety, family facilities, affordability and overall quality. Its conclusion for British skiers: look east and north.
The cheapest skiing
Three countries dominate the price scores:
- Bjelašnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina: 5/5 for affordability. The mountain near Sarajevo hosted alpine skiing at the 1984 Winter Olympics.
- Straja, Romania: 5/5 for affordability and 4/5 for family facilities. The index’s pick for budget families and learners.
- Pamporovo, Chepelare and Vitosha, Bulgaria: all 5/5 on price. Pamporovo is singled out for beginners and ski schools.
Both Bjelašnica and Straja score 57/100 overall: not the biggest areas, but solid set-ups for the money.
Best for families
Idre Fjäll and Sälen, Sweden score 5/5 for family facilities, 4/5 for affordability and above 70/100 overall. Scandinavia is rarely called cheap, but for families the index says it pays.
The sweet spot
For bigger terrain without Zermatt or St. Moritz prices, the index points to Dachstein West, Austria and Zakopane, Poland, which pair strong infrastructure with good affordability scores.
The hidden costs
Lift passes grab the headlines, but the index notes that equipment hire, ski school and eating out decide the real bill. In Bulgaria and Romania they remain well below Western European averages.
Plan it
- Compare for yourself: the index lets you filter resorts by cost, ability and group size.
- Learners: book lessons with your package; Pamporovo and Straja are built around ski schools.
- Timing: January, after the New Year rush and outside school half-term, is the best-value window.
