Two set-piece events in the first half of November will shape London itineraries. The National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph is on Sunday 8 November, the morning after the city’s biggest Bonfire Night displays. The Lord Mayor’s Show then closes almost all of the City on Saturday 14 November. Both are free, and no tickets are needed.

The dates

Event Date Key times What it means
National Service of Remembrance Sun 8 Nov Whitehall opens 08:00; silence 11:00; service ends 11:25 Whitehall crowds; Great George Street closed
Silent Ceremony (Lord Mayor) Fri 13 Nov — Ceremony only
Lord Mayor’s Show Sat 14 Nov River flotilla 08:30; procession 11:00 City roads closed; usually reopen before 16:00

Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph

According to GOV.UK, Whitehall opens to the public at 08:00, and “space will be limited”. The two-minute silence at 11:00 is marked by guns fired by the King’s Troop on Horse Guards Parade. The service ends at 11:25, when Royal British Legion detachments disperse past the Cenotaph.

The public can watch from the pavements on Whitehall and Parliament Street. Big screens are north of the Cenotaph, outside Dover House, near Whitehall Place and on the corner of King Charles Street. A wheelchair and accessibility enclosure on the west side of Parliament Street is first-come, first-served, with one carer per person.

Great George Street is closed on the day, and the route between Victoria Street and St James’s Park is via Storey’s Gate. Expect a lot of police, and don’t bring large bags. Drones are banned.

The Lord Mayor’s Show

The Lord Mayor’s Show is always on the second Saturday in November. This year the incoming Lord Mayor travels by ceremonial barge from Westminster at 08:30. According to the City of London, it’s the first river flotilla since 2017. The procession leaves Mansion House at 11:00 and goes via St Paul’s, Cheapside and Fleet Street to the Royal Courts of Justice. It’s back at Mansion House by about 13:33, returning along Victoria Embankment. Almost all City roads are closed to traffic until they reopen, usually before 16:00.

Some of her warmest memories are of fishing and camping in New Zealand's Bay of Islands with her family as a kid. She's a New Zealand citizen, and it will always feel like home. She takes the window seat (she wants to see the world, not the beverage cart), swears by her Trtl travel pillow (comfort over cool, always) and orders whatever the locals are having. Waking up to the sounds of the rainforest in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle is her “this is why I travel” moment, and Arizona's deserts and sunsets are where she'd go back tomorrow. She covers the places, people, food and festivals that make a destination memorable. Friends say funny, effervescent and organized. Her mum adds cuddly. Next stop: Bali.
