While overseas visitors to the US fell in July, Americans kept heading out.

US citizens made 11,776,323 international departures in July, up 2.3% on July 2025, according to the National Travel and Tourism Office. Mexico took 3,707,866 of them, or 31.5%.

Over the year to date, North America (Mexico and Canada) accounts for 48.8% of US citizen departures and overseas destinations for 51.2%. More than half of American international trips still cross an ocean.

For comparison, 6.25 million international visitors arrived in the US in July, so departures outnumbered arrivals almost two to one.

Lauren Smith writes Hotel Watch for Not An Atlas. She grew up in Glasgow and now works from Toronto, usually within reach of a pug, a laptop and a stack of McDonald's Monopoly vouchers. Her first flight was to Orlando, and she still remembers how kind everyone was. She's a window-seat loyalist (somewhere to rest your head), eats whatever the locals recommend (schnitzel and an Austrian beer, the moment she landed in Vienna), and always packs spare underwear. Just in case. Hallstatt on a sunny day is her “this is why I travel” moment, the Highlands are where she'd go back tomorrow, and South Korea or Japan is next. Friends say bubbly, caring and fun. Her mum says chaotic but organized.
