Switzerland by Architecture
Switzerland Tourism is pushing architecture as a reason to travel, and the buildings work as a self-guided rail route if clients plan around seasonal closing dates.
Switzerland’s tourism board spent its September media newsletter on architecture, from Le Corbusier’s houses to Mario Botta’s mountain church. For advisors the useful part isn’t the list of buildings, it’s that they line up along the rail network and suit clients who prefer to travel independently. The catch is timing: several of the best sites run on short seasons, and some close or go to group-only visits from November.
The route
Zurich: Pavillon Le Corbusier. Le Corbusier’s last building, finished in 1967, and his only one built entirely of steel and glass, sits beside Lake Zurich. The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich runs it for the city. The 2026 season ends on 29 November; it opens Tuesday to Sunday from noon (to 8 p.m. on Thursdays), and entry is CHF 15.
Basel and the border. Switzerland Tourism points visitors to Basel’s architecture trails, including buildings by Herzog & de Meuron. Clients should know that the Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid buildings usually linked to Basel, the Vitra Design Museum and Hadid’s 1993 fire station, are on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, just over the German border. Bring passports.
Lake Geneva: Villa Le Lac. The small lakeside house Le Corbusier built for his parents in Corseaux, near Vevey, in 1923–24, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of his work. It opens on set days in spring and summer; from November to March it is open only to groups of 12 or more by reservation, and tickets are cash only.
The Jura: La Chaux-de-Fonds. The architect’s hometown has his early houses, including Maison Blanche (1912), built for his parents, which opens Friday to Sunday from October to May. The newsletter mentions a guided tour that also covers Villa Fallet and Villa Turque.

In the upper Maggia Valley, Mario Botta’s church of San Giovanni Battista (1994–96) replaced a 17th-century church destroyed by an avalanche in 1986. It is built of local gneiss and white marble from the nearby Peccia valley under a glass roof. This is the stop furthest off the usual map, and the one to combine with hiking in the valley.
This autumn
Two dated events from the same newsletter can anchor a late-October trip. Käsefest Bern, a free regional cheese fair, fills Waisenhausplatz on 31 October. In Bellinzona, the Floating Notes Festival runs 30 October to 1 November at the Teatro Sociale, with Jeff Mills performing a live electronic score to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.
If you’re travelling: see the Zurich pavilion before 29 November, and check opening days for each house before planning a day around it. Several open only from Friday to Sunday.
For advisors
- Who to pitch: design-literate repeat Switzerland clients who have done the Alps and want a theme; independent rail travellers.
- When: May to October gives the most opening days. Late October adds the Bern and Bellinzona events.
- What to book: a private guide in La Chaux-de-Fonds; a car or driver for Mogno; a Swiss rail pass for the rest.
- Watch: winter closures and group-only rules at Villa Le Lac before quoting November to March dates.
