Winter Hawaii capacity from the mainland starts arriving in two waves. Delta adds flights from Detroit, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles on November 9. Then new and returning routes from Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Boston, Boise and Spokane start between December 17 and 19, in time for the holidays.

What starts when

Start Route Airline Frequency
Nov. 9 Detroit–Honolulu Delta Three a week becomes daily
Nov. 9 Salt Lake City–Kona Delta Daily, earlier than last year
Nov. 9 Los Angeles–Kona Delta Larger Boeing 767-300
Dec. 17 Chicago O’Hare–Maui American Daily to March 27
Dec. 17 Boise–Honolulu Alaska/Hawaiian Daily to March 21
Dec. 19 Minneapolis–St. Paul–Maui Delta New route
Dec. 19 Boston–Honolulu Delta Returning route
Dec. 19 Spokane–Honolulu Alaska/Hawaiian Saturdays to April 17
Jan. 4 Atlanta–Honolulu Delta Second flight, three a week, through March

The details

Delta calls this its largest Hawaii schedule. Its new Minneapolis–St. Paul to Maui flight runs daily over the holidays and spring break, and five times a week through the core winter season. Boston–Honolulu comes back daily in late December, then runs four times a week. Both use the Airbus A330-300 with four cabins: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Delta Main. The Detroit and Atlanta flights also use the A330-300.

American Airlines flies its new Chicago O’Hare–Maui route daily from December 17 to March 27 on a Boeing 787-8.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, both part of Alaska Air Group, add daily Boise–Honolulu flights on a Boeing 737 from December 17 to March 21, and a Saturday Spokane–Honolulu flight from December 19 to April 17. Hawaiian is also adding Las Vegas–Honolulu flights during the peak holiday and spring-break periods.

Why it matters

Four of the nine changes serve Maui or Kona, so more clients can fly straight to a neighbor island without changing in Honolulu. Clients in Minneapolis, Boston, Boise and Spokane get a winter nonstop with no West Coast connection.

Her first flight was to Orlando, and she still remembers how kind everyone was. She's a window-seat loyalist (somewhere to rest your head), eats whatever the locals recommend (schnitzel and an Austrian beer, the moment she landed in Vienna), and always packs spare underwear. Just in case. Hallstatt on a sunny day is her “this is why I travel” moment, the Highlands are where she'd go back tomorrow, and South Korea or Japan is next. Friends say bubbly, caring and fun. Her mum says chaotic but organized.
