America’s Five Scariest Haunts
America Haunts has named the five scariest haunted attractions in the US for 2026. Each scares you a different way, and one is in its final season at home.
Three weeks before Halloween, America Haunts, the national association of premier haunted attractions, has named its five scariest haunts for 2026. The interesting part is how different they are. One is an old school, one a whole scream park, one a movie-set swamp, one four haunts in a row and one a 50-acre estate built around a vampire legend.
If you are building a fall weekend around a fright, here is what each one does.
The Dent Schoolhouse, Cincinnati, Ohio
A former schoolhouse turned into classrooms, catacombs, a carnival, a lab and a greenhouse full of spiders and werewolves. It celebrates its 30th season this year. The scare to know about is the Ceiling Crawler in Detention Hall: an actor stalks guests from above, in a padded room built for it.
Spooky World Presents Nightmare New England, Litchfield, New Hampshire
About an hour from Boston, this is a full night out rather than a single walk-through. The 2026 route starts with a mile-long Haunted Hayride through the woods and Nightmare in 3D, then moves on to more haunts, including a fifth new one, Petrified, plus fire pits, food, bars and nightly explosions.
The 13th Gate, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
More than three decades in, The 13th Gate is known for sets that feel like film locations: tunnels, crypts, a city morgue and a snake-infested swamp across more than a dozen realms. New for 2026 is a jungle-swallowed temple with a bone-covered throne beneath a giant skull.
Bennett’s Curse, Dundalk, Maryland
Just outside Baltimore, Bennett’s Curse runs four haunts back to back: Halloween 3D, The Crypts, House of the Demons and Ravenbrook Asylum. If it has been on your list, go now. After more than 25 years, this is its final season at its long-time Eastpoint Mall location.
Thrillvania, Terrell, Texas
East of Dallas, Thrillvania spreads three haunted houses across 50 acres. Its Verdun Manor is built around the legend of Baron Verdun and Lady Cassandra, a vampire and a werewolf, and you walk through a cemetery and Voodoo Bayou before you reach the house.
Plan it
- Dates: most run weekends from late September to early November, with extra nights in Halloween week. Check each attraction’s own calendar and book timed tickets.
- Make it a weekend: Baton Rouge pairs with New Orleans, about an hour away; Nightmare New England with a Boston fall-foliage trip.
- Age limits: these are intense. Most advise against young children; check before booking a family.
For advisors
- Who to pitch: friend groups and couples who want a themed fall city break.
- When: now. Prime Saturday slots in Halloween week go first.
- Watch: Bennett’s Curse’s move after this season.
