See the Niagara Gorge’s Fall Colours From the River, Until 31 October
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours runs 45-minute rides into the Niagara Gorge's Devil's Hole Rapids from Queenston, Ont., and Lewiston, N.Y. Here's how to plan the ride, whichever season you go.
Most people see the Niagara Gorge’s fall colours from the Parkway. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours has a lower angle, from the river itself, and a season that runs to 31 October. The 2026 season ends on 31 October, when river flows and conditions start to change.
The ride
- Where: daily from Queenston, Ont., and from Lewiston, N.Y., both until 31 October.
- What: a 45-minute guided tour through the gorge and into the Devil’s Hole Rapids, in custom-built jet boats.
- Wet or dry: choose a soaking or a covered boat. Both run through the gorge.
- Departures vary day to day. Book on the company’s site.
“Fall completely transforms the Niagara Gorge, and there really is no better way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the changing colours than from the water,” said John Kinney, president of Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. The company has run on the lower Niagara River since 1992.
Planning a trip
When to go. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours runs seasonally, and its 2026 season closes on 31 October. The company had not posted a 2027 opening date on its website when this was written, so check there before you plan a spring or summer trip. Across the river, Niagara Falls USA says Niagara Falls State Park reaches peak colour in mid to late October, two to three weeks later than the surrounding area. For colour elsewhere in the province, see our guide to Ontario’s fall colour.
Where to board. Canadian tours leave from 55 River Frontage Road in Queenston, Ont., on the waterfront next to the public Queenston Boat Ramp. That is 15 to 20 minutes’ drive from Clifton Hill. American tours leave from 115 South Water Street in Lewiston, N.Y., on the lower level next to the Griffon Brewery and Gastropub, about 15 to 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, N.Y., via the Niagara Scenic Parkway. Both docks have limited free parking, and the company can’t guarantee a space.
Without a car. The company’s Rapid Transit shuttle picks up at the Floral Clock, which you can reach on WEGO buses. In Lewiston, the Discover Niagara Shuttle stops nearby. Neither runs all season, so check the schedules first. From Toronto, GO Transit sells a GO + WEGO combo ticket that covers the return trip and local transit at the Niagara end.

Guests must arrive 45 minutes early to check in, change and attend a safety briefing. Allow about two hours, including time to change afterwards.
Wet, dry or somewhere in between
According to the company’s FAQ, the fleet has nine boats and three ways to ride. Wet Jet boats are open-topped, and every seat gets soaked. The Wet Freedom Jet is mostly enclosed, with two open “Power Row” rows at the front. The Dry Freedom Jet is fully enclosed.
- Height: at least 40 inches for Dry Freedom Jet seats and 44 inches for Wet Jet seats.
- Front rows: the open front rows on the Wet Freedom Jet are adults only (13 or older and over 100 lb). Guests under 12, or under 100 lb, can’t sit in the first three or four rows of any boat.
- Health: not recommended for anyone with a history of osteoporosis or heart, neck or back injuries. Pregnant guests can’t ride.
- Accessibility: the dock is wheelchair accessible but the boats are not. Staff help guests on and off.
What it costs. The ticket page lists child fares (12 and under) at C$44.95 from Queenston and US$39.95 from Lewiston. Adult fares are listed there too. Canadian fares add 13% HST, and both sides add a 6% fuel surcharge. All tickets are final sale, and changing or cancelling within 24 hours of departure costs a 10% rebooking fee.
What to bring. For a wet seat, bring a full change of clothes (there are change rooms), shoes that can get soaked (bare feet aren’t allowed) and layers for cold days. Leave your phone, wallet and keys in the free lockers, and bring the credit card you booked with.
More of the gorge
- Niagara Glen (Niagara Parks): four kilometres of rugged trails in one of the last areas of old-growth Carolinian forest in Niagara, reached by stairways down into the gorge. It’s open year-round, sunrise to sunset.
- Whirlpool Aero Car: a cable car designed by the Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo, running since 1916. It crosses about 3,500 feet of the gorge, and the international border four times. It runs April to November.
- Queenston Heights National Historic Site: Brock’s Monument stands on the escarpment above Queenston. Costumed guides tell the story of the 1812 battle, and the climb to the top gives views over the river.
In October, add Haunt Manor. For dates, see our long weekends calendar.
