Sweden Sells the Silence
Visit Sweden's Introvert Travel Agency treats privacy and personal space as a product. Its survey says 53% of travellers would pay more for that.
Visit Sweden has opened what it calls The Introvert Travel Agency. The name is a marketing hook, but the idea behind it matters for the trade: a national tourism board is selling personal space, optional socializing and the freedom to be left alone as reasons to choose a destination.
What the survey says
The campaign rests on a YouGov survey that Visit Sweden commissioned in June and July 2026. The release doesn’t give the sample size. Luxurious Magazine reports 9,212 adults in nine countries, surveyed from 26 June to 6 July. Fast Company says more than 9,000 people in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and six other countries.
According to Visit Sweden:
- 67% of travellers prefer destinations where social interaction feels optional rather than expected.
- 53% would pay extra for more peace, privacy or fewer crowds.
- 41% call themselves introverts, 45% a mix and 14% extroverts.
- Nearly half sometimes need a “vacation from their vacation” to recover.
The U.S. figures are a little higher. Travel Weekly reports that 44% of American respondents identify as introverts.
What the “agency” actually does
It isn’t a tour operator. Visitors to the website take a short quiz, with questions such as “How much small talk can you handle?” (Fast Company). The site then suggests trips run by Swedish tour operators. Visit Sweden “does not book or sell holidays itself,” Luxurious Magazine reports. Examples in coverage include an eight-day cycling trip along the southwest coast, winter snowmobiling and northern lights trips, a coastal self-drive, and self-guided packrafting and hiking.

“Here, being social is an option, not an obligation,” said Susanne Andersson, chief executive of Visit Sweden. The release also points to Sweden’s low population density and allemansrätten, the right of public access, which it says lets visitors experience nature independently and at their own pace.
Why it matters at the top end
Luxury advisors report the same demand. In Virtuoso‘s 2027 Luxe Report, 47% of advisors said demand for the privacy and personalization of ultraluxe travel is growing (Not An Atlas, The Rise of the Gen-XYZ-pedition, 1 Oct 2026). At that end of the market, Virtuoso says, privacy can mean reserving an entire ship or lodge. Sweden is betting the same instinct extends to people who simply want not to talk to anyone at breakfast.
If you’re travelling: The agency’s website is a free starting point. If you’d rather have a quiet trip arranged for you, use it to shortlist ideas, then book through an advisor or the operator.
For advisors
- Sell the solitude, not the label. Few clients will call themselves introverts. Pitch it as control instead: private cabins, self-guided days and fewer group meals.
- Use the shoulder seasons. Visit Sweden says only about 200 of the Stockholm archipelago’s 30,000 islands have permanent residents. Ferries run year-round, and many hotels charge less for rooms off-season.
- Pair Swedish Lapland with privacy. Combine a remote cabin or lodge stay with a private guide for aurora or snowmobile days, and keep group activities optional.
- Find the operators. Visit Sweden’s trade site lists regional tourism boards, incoming tour operators and DMCs (destination management companies) that can build these trips.
