River Cruising Is Getting Younger
At least 25 new river ships arrive in 2027, and Celebrity and Explora are entering the market. A large US agency says the clients calling are younger.
River cruising is a small slice of the cruise business: about 7% of overnight cruise capacity, according to Pavlus Travel & Cruise, one of the largest independent agencies in the US. Its founder, Craig S. Pavlus, says the slice is changing fast, and his release sets out what his agents hear on the phones.
Who is calling
River cruising used to be mostly guests over 65. Pavlus says the agency is now taking more calls from Generation X, Millennial and family travellers. He credits Starlink Wi-Fi, better entertainment and mobile apps. “This definitely isn’t your great grandma’s river cruise,” he said.
The supply wave
- New lines: Celebrity Cruises starts river cruises in 2027, and Explora Journeys has signed a letter of intent with a Dutch shipyard for river ships, with bookings expected next year.
- New ships: Pavlus counts at least 25 new river vessels launching in 2027, mostly from established lines including AmaWaterways, American Cruise Lines, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking.
- This month: Viking christens seven new river ships in Amsterdam on 15 October 2026.
Pavlus cites CLIA figures putting global river capacity at about 61,000 berths, against roughly 776,000 lower berths at sea.
What clients want
- Experiences over sightseeing: cooking with a chef, painting tiles on the Douro, vineyard walks with a family, a fish market with the ship’s chef.
- Wellness: bikes and e-bikes on board, hikes ashore, and more fitness space. Tauck‘s new Harmonie, on the Seine in 2027, has an expanded wellness area, The Retreat.
- Cruise plus land: Uniworld and sister brand Luxury Gold launch a Cruise & Tour collection in 2027, and Avalon Waterways and Globus add cruise-and-tour itineraries.
- Ocean converts: big-ship cruisers and first-timers asking about smaller ships without the crowds.
For advisors
- Re-pitch the product: if you only sell river cruises to over-70s, you are missing the clients now asking. Lead with active and food-led sailings.
- Watch the new entrants: Celebrity’s and Explora’s river launches will pull their ocean loyalists. Register interest lists now.
- Package the land: pre- and post-stays (Lisbon with the Douro, Paris with the Seine) lift the booking value.
